Almost Moved In!

Well, it’s Saturday, and I’ve been in Jamaica Estates for six days. I’m still up to my clavicles in boxes, but I figure I’m about 3/4 moved in. There are still plenty of boxes in the basement labeled “Kitchen” or “STCCG” or “Beer Bottles.” I’ll get to more of those next week, when I’m more settled into my bedroom and office.

The office is in pretty decent shape. I’ve inherited an hp color laserjet (thanks, Frank!), which makes me long for the Newman Center’s Canon Imagerunner Document Beast a little less. I’ve retired the 5-year-old Dell Craptop (sorry, Frank!), and replaced it with a gorgeous new Mac Mini: the new one that was released only last week. I plugged in my backup drive, fired up the Migration Assistant, and 90 minutes later that Mini woke up believing it was the iMac I left in Columbus, with all my applications, documents, settings, all where I’d left them. It Just Works.

We’ve improved the quality of life for the Paulist Presidential Board by 10%, by installing Keurig coffee makers at home and at the office.

The car situation is borderline dismal: an eight (?) year old Saturn with what my dad used to call a “chuck-wagon suspension.” I keep looking in the rear view mirror to see if there are pieces of it on the road behind me. So far the GPS is performing well, getting me around unfamiliar territory without too much stress.

In the First Consultor department: I’ve been working with Mike and Sean (president and vp) on some lingering assignment issues. Bottom line: there aren’t enough Paulists to go around, and no amount of lateral movement is going to provide us with the personnel we need. We either need fewer commitments, more Paulists, or both. In the “more Paulists” category I spent last night reviewing the application files of two more potential novices. Bring ‘em on, Dave!

OK, back to the boxes, and eventually, dinner. Tomorrow I’m headed up to Mahopac to spend Fathers’ Day with my friend Michael, who’s a Genuine Father, rather than a metaphorical one like me. Should be a good break.
